Why (good) fat is so important

In our heads, all too often fat is the enemy. Fat is the thing we’re fighting against. Fat is what we don’t want anymore.

To understand the role that fats play in our body, it’s important to understand the different types of fat there are and the effect each type plays on your body.

Fat plays a vital role in our body’s ability to absorb vitamins, including vitamin A, vitamin D and vitamin E. Without some fat, our body won’t be able to digest these vitamins and that can have other health repercussions.

Fat is also an important source of energy, and you burn a small amount of fat everyday simply by doing what you do. If you’re an athlete or the sporty type, too little fat can be a problem as you don’t have anything to burn.

Any fats that you consume that are neither used by your body’s cells or to create energy just gets converted into body fat. Other forms of body fat can come from unused carbohydrate and protein sources that you consume.

So why does fat have such a negative reputation then? This is mostly due to the different forms of fats available, and if you want to harness its benefits, making sure you consume high quality, healthy fat is the way to go. 

That means avoiding fat that has been processed heavily or that has oxidised if it’s been subjected to heat and light, and opting for natural sources of healthy fat. 

You can obtain this from foods such as nuts, olives, butter, ghee, coconut, but also from meat and other animal fats. For example, the keto diet focuses heavily on avoiding carbs and instead harnessing the power of these good, high quality fats.

Another good source of fat comes from unsaturated fats such as Omega-3 and Omega-6, which you can find in plants and fish.

Omega-3 is highly available in things like sardines, mackerel, kippers and herring. Omega-6 meanwhile is readily available in things like vegetable oil, rapeseed, corn, nuts and sunflower seeds.

Omega-3 and Omega-6 are both examples of polyunsaturated fats, but there are also monounsaturated fats. Avocados for example are a great source of monounsaturated fats. 

In terms of finding the ideal balance of fats in your body, you must accept that you need some fat in your system. But if you’re the kind of person who only wants to put good things into your body, it’s important you opt for as much unprocessed food as possible to avoid the bad type of fat, and maintain a balanced diet.
