The summer is here and with that comes insects and especially mosquitos. I don't dislike insects. I love them but when they decide to sting, it hurts, and it itches and nobody likes that sensation.

What makes most mainstream insect repellent harmful? 

First of all, it's the amount of toxic ingredients they contain. Not only to the wearer's health but to the air and environment.

The most toxic being DEET. DEET (N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide) is a chemical that was patented by the US Army as an effective mosquito repellent.

Studies have found that it can be harmful to the nervous system and countries including Canada and the US have banned products containing various levels of DEET. In Europe, they are slowly banning DEET products too.

DEET and why we shouldn't use it!

Let's face it, we need insects. Their numbers are dwindling and they are essential to our lives. Insects create the biological foundation for all ecosystems. They cycle nutrients, pollinate plants, disperse seeds, maintain soil structure and fertility, control populations of other organisms, and provide a major food source.

DEET will deter insects, yes but its incredibly harmful for them too. DEET is a pesticide intended to kill insects!

If DEET kills insect, imagine what it does to your internally as you breathe it in? Not only that, remember that whatever you put on your skin, will makes its way in too so for your health and safety there are other options that will not cost the earth and your health too.

What can you use instead?
