Evolution Organics’ Guide to Superfoods

20th May 2021

In the health and wellbeing space, you will often hear new buzzwords and learn about things emerging that could be of real advantage to you.

Some of these are merely fads and go as quickly as they arrive. But from time to time there is a genuine advancement to the status quo.

When this happens, it’s well worth paying attention. One emergent phrase or buzzword that has stuck around is superfood. So if you do not know what a superfood is, or what kind of benefits they bring, you could well be missing out.

In our latest blog, we have decided to provide our readers with all they need to know about superfoods. So take a look, and learn something you might not have known before.

What are superfoods?

‘Superfood’ is a general term for foods with exceptional qualities and possible health benefits.

Though there is no specific definition of a superfood, many products that are a great source of vitamins and minerals get placed into the superfood category.

What are superfoods purported to do?

Different superfoods offer different possible health benefits. They are often targeted by people thanks to the benefits they may bring, offering an alternative way of tackling a specific condition. Or they can be treated as a general preventative measure to help keep people healthy and happy.

Superfoods have been reported to help in reducing the risk of chronic diseases and lowering the risk of heart disease. They also offer other health benefits thanks to their possible anti-inflammatory qualities.

Many superfoods also contain healthy fats. Flaxseed for example contains high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, while avocadoes contain superb amounts of monounsaturated fats.

Ultimately, different superfoods do different things. But their general high levels of vitamins and minerals can be really advantageous when it comes to warding off disease and illness, keeping your bodily system in check, and just making you feel good.

What superfoods are out there?

As mentioned, there is no definitive way of categorising a superfood. But there are some foods that are pretty frequently referred to as such thanks to their possible health benefits.

Many dark leafy vegetables are commonly referred to as superfoods. Cruciferous vegetables such as brussels sprouts, swiss chard, broccoli and collard greens are high in fibre, vitamins and minerals.

Other foods often referred to as superfoods include varieties of berries, including blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries and cranberries. Other superfood possibilities include eggs, legumes, nuts, seeds and garlic. Turmeric, ginger, avocadoes and mushrooms are also often included within these ranks.

While using the term ‘superfood’ to describe these may be a subject of debate, there’s little doubt that they will benefit you in some way.
