Cognitive is Living Nutrition's brand new range of formulations featuring adaptogens and nootropics to support your brain around the clock.

Stress can have a major impact on many aspects of our health, including immunity, digestive function, and cognitive health. Brain fog, inability to focus, and disrupted sleep are some of the common concerns that seem to plague us in our busy, stressful world.

Living Nutrition have formulated their cognitive range to target many of the modern day cognitive issues we face, from supporting clarity of mind and focus, to helping you unwind and get a restful night. No matter what time of day, there is a product to support you.

What are adaptogens?

Adaptogens are a group of plants which possess adaptive properties, meaning in nature they respond and adapt well to harsh conditions, and they support us in a similar way.

Adaptogens help to balance, restore and protect the body, supporting our hormonal health, energy levels, and immune system. There are around 20 plants that qualify as adaptogens, a term coined in 1947 by a Russian pharmacologist who was investigating the stress-busting and energy-enhancing herbs used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurvedic medicine.

Adaptogens should never be isolated or extracted. Fermenting maintains adaptogenic integrity by taking the whole of the plant and creating a superior form of the adaptogen, bursting with life and vitality.

What are nootropics?

Nootropics are brain-boosters that come in many different forms from caffeine to lion’s mane mushroom. Also known as smart drugs, these substances are proven to enhance brain health and cognitive performance.

There are a variety of different substances that can be considered nootropic and the list keeps on growing. What they all have in common is that they boost brain function, producing a range of benefits including supporting memory, focus, mood, and relaxation.

Why is fermentation important for brain health?

Fermented foods were traditionally known to work on the senses and they are the most important source of mood stabilising nutrients, offering profound benefits for brain health.

Our ancestors knew the beneficial effects of fermented foods on the body including mental function and wellbeing- even the name Kefir was derived from the Turkish word for good feeling.

As our diets have radically changed and we are no longer consuming these traditional dietary staples like fermented foods, mental health disorders-which were considered an anomaly in ancestral communities-have risen to an all-time high (1).

There is a complex communication and signalling system that links our Central Nervous System (including our brain) and our Enteric Nervous System (including our GI tract) known as the Brain-Gut axis. The gut microbiome plays a critical role in regulating normal function of this axis.

There are many potential mechanisms by which the microbiome influences brain activity including: producing signalling molecules (amino acid metabolites, short chain fatty acids and neuroactive substances), influencing neurotransmitter production (imbalances of which are linked to depression), activating neural pathways, and limiting inflammatory response (2).

Fermentation and fermented supplements offer substantial benefits to brain health, from the magnified antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, reduction of intestinal permeability, positive influence on nutritional status, direct production of GABA and other bioactive chemicals (1).

We are only just beginning to scratch the surface in our understanding of the relationship between the microbiome and brain health, but fermented foods and fermented supplements may be the key link in the gut-brain axis to support overall cognitive health.
