Staying in Shape at Home

19th May 2020

We are all facing a number of challenges at the moment, the likes of which we couldn’t have seen coming this time last year.

With so much going on, it can be hard to stay focused on some of the things that we would like to do. One such thing might be staying in shape and staying active during lockdown.

Staying in shape requires commitment and discipline. But with so many other things going on in the world right now, it can be hard to find those two key things given how much the world seems to have been thrown into a state of flux.

That doesn’t mean that you can’t start or maintain a healthy way of living, and even try something new.

In this latest Evolution Organics blog, we take a look at some of the ways you can stay physically and mentally well at home during this peculiar time.

Gentle exercise

Exercising regularly is an excellent way to keep your body and mind in a good state. This is particularly important during this time of difficulty, with many stressors around for you and your family.

Exercise is a great thing for us to do because the benefits go beyond simply helping our bodies, but benefitting our mental wellbeing too. This is perfect for lockdown, as the changes that have come about in our lives have naturally impacted both body and mind.

But what’s the best approach? Well it depends on what you’re looking for, but if gentle exercise is the order of the day, the good thing is there are plenty of easy ways to get started.

One great way is yoga. Yoga is a thoughtful, but testing discipline that works various muscle groups in our bodies and helps us increase flexibility, relaxation and mindfulness. YouTube is packed full of beginner yoga videos that are a wonderful way to start your gentle exercise programme, and there’s also all sorts of mobile apps available to get you started with yoga.

Gentle walking is another great way to unwind while getting some fresh air and exercise. A lap around the block is a good start, and walking is the kind of thing that once you get the bug for, it’s easy to really start doing more of and truly enjoying it. However, remember to keep social distancing measures when exercising outdoors.

And if you have a treadmill in your home, you don’t even need to leave the four walls of your home to start walking, or even jogging.

Next Level Exercise

Speaking of jogging, this is a next level option that is similarly healthy and something that can quickly become a habit. If you’re new to jogging or have never tried it, it might seem like the most alien and painful thing going. But the sense of progression and accomplishment as you tick off more miles and start to notice the benefits that your body enjoys is really something.

Of course, there are lots of other wonderful exercise activities that are still possible at the moment.

Cycling is one and you can get out and enjoy nature with ease on a bike, while in terms of staying at home, there’s some great home workouts doing the rounds at the moment. It obviously depends on what you’re looking to achieve, but if you have a specific goal in mind - be it losing weight or gaining muscle - there is definitely a workout out there for you.

Eating right

The lockdown has led to many of us working from home, and that can prove problematic given how close to the kitchen our workstation is likely to be. This means it can be easy to find yourself raiding the cupboards with increasing regularity and not really thinking about it.

This is not good if you are looking to stay in or get in shape, so eating right during the lockdown is important. This can mean changing some of your meal choices for healthier options, or simply not snacking as much. Try to be considerate of what you are putting into your body and you will give yourself a better chance of staying in shape during this peculiar time.
