What is MCT oil and what can it do for you?

It’s natural to want to know a little more about a product of this nature before committing to embracing all it can potentially bring from a health perspective.

As such, you may have heard of MCT oil as a possible dietary supplement to add to your day-to-day diet/menu.

This is why, in the latest Evolution Organics blog, we’ve outlined what MCT oil is, what it can do for you, and what products we have in our online store that you can take advantage of. Let us answer all your MCT oil questions.

What is MCT oil?

MCT stands for medium-chain triglycerides. That’s a bit of a mouthful, so it’s fair to say the acronym is the best option name-wise.

MCT oil is made of MCT fats. Included on the list of sources for MCT are dairy products, coconut oil and palm kernel oil.

MCT fats aren’t your run-of-the-mill fat though. They’re medium-chain as mentioned, while long-chain fatty acids are what most people consume in their day-to-day. Long-chain means more carbon atoms – medium-chain means fewer.

Fewer carbon atoms means the body absorbs MCT fats in a different way. They go straight from your gut to your liver, where they get turned into ketones.

This is where the real health benefits of MCT oil start to be felt.

Go on then – what are the health benefits?

Glad you asked. Ketones are the key to MCT oil benefits, and these are created in the body when the liver breaks down fat in decent amounts.

They are then available to be used by the brain as an energy source. They act in a similar way to glucose or sugar.

The real beauty is that any calories in MCTs get used up almost immediately. That means they probably won’t be stored as fat, so you can give yourself a heightened level of energy with less risk of putting on weight.

What specific areas are MCT oils thought to be effective in?

One possible benefit is enhanced brain function and memory. Interestingly, people suffering with Alzheimer’s were found to be more able to take-up ketones than glucose according to a study from the New York Academy of Sciences

MCT oils are very popular with people looking for weight management supplements. This is because they release peptide YY and leptin – two hormones that make people feel full. The fuller you feel, the less likely you are to eat something you shouldn’t when dieting and ultimately lose weight.

If you’re an endurance sport enthusiast, MCT oils might well help reduce lactic acid build up. So if you’re looking for something to take the edge off lactic acid effecting your performance, MCT oils are worth trying.

How to take it?

Simply put, the easiest way to take MCT oil/powder is in your coffee or smoothie. It mixes incredibly well when blended and it won’t affect the taste. The Evolution Organics team have it in their bulletproof coffee most morning (coffee+butter+mct).
