Winter Wellness with Living Nutrition

Posted by Marie-Eve Maitland and Living Nutrition on 24th Oct 2023

Every time winter comes around, many people find themselves coughing and sneezing as the temperatures drop.

Though colds and coughs for example can strike year round, they tend to become more prevalent in the winter due to cold air making it more difficult for our body to get rid of viruses. Additionally, we’re more likely to be exposed to such viruses as we spend more time indoors during the winter, where these viruses are more likely to be encountered.

But rather than reaching for the medicine cabinet and trying to make those nasty symptoms relent, being proactive rather than reactive can help you avoid those nasty sniffles and help you feel great all winter long.

Tip 1 - Take Care of Your Immune System

The human immune system covers different types of cells, organs, tissues, proteins and more, all working together for a common goal – to protect your body from harmful intrudes.

So, with this is mind there are a few things you can do to help it.

Get Enough Sleep

Sleep allows your body to replenish its immune cells.

The production of immune cells mostly takes place when sleeping. And when you don’t get adequate sleep, this production is reduced.

Aim for 7-8 hours every night.

Take Care of Your Gut!

Gut health will impact how the immune system will respond to foreign microbes entering the body, and the immune system is better at fighting infections if the colony of gut microbes is diverse and healthy.

Eat More Real Food

Foods such as fruits, veggies, nuts & seeds, are rich in nutrients and antioxidants.

Antioxidants protect the body againt free radicals which can in turn have a negative effect on your immune system. It's all related!

Manage Stress Levels

Adaptogens are plant foods, herbs or mushrooms that gently harmonise different organ systems in the body to modulate the body’s response to stress.

These herbs support healthy energy levels and enhance resilience to stress, so are ideal for physically and emotionally challenging periods.

Tip 2 - Stay Warm

We understand that the cost of living has meant we are rather reluctant to put the heating on when we are at home but there are free things that you can do that can help keep warm.

  1. Layers, layers and more layers: use blankets and throws througout the house. Wear a jumper, a house coat, sock and slippers
  2. Try to reduce draughts: you can fit draft excluders around doors cheaply
  3. Make warming food (in your slow cooker) and drinks - and for drinks, use a thermal mug
  4. Get moving! Keep as active as possible to boost your circulation. Move around, any exercise will help keep you warm.

Tip 3 - Supplements that can Help this Winter

We repeat this often, but we truly beleive that supplements should only be used to "SUPPLEMENT" a good diet. So, with this in mind, your food should take center stage.
