Product Review: Cleanmarine Krill Oil for Kids

On the whole (and partly thanks to what we do), our daughter, Elodie (or chunks as I like to call her) eats well. She has green smoothies, loves sauerkraut & kombucha, drinks plenty of plain water and coconut water and is a massive fan of eggs & avocado which we totally encourage.

Elodie's diet is quite balanced but one thing lacking was oily fish. She will have fish fingers (the majority of time homemade) and sardines or tuna but that will be at the most twice a week. And the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids to young children's development is not something to brush aside. And with today’s diets loaded with so many omega-6s, getting enough omega-3s is especially important.

Once she reached the grand old age of 2, I started to look into omega based supplements. I know the benefits they have on growing children. I opted for Cleanmarine which both my husband and I have been using.

CleanMarine uses krill: "Krill form the most abundant living organism on the planet which is lucky for us as they provide one of the most promising new discoveries in the field of health supplements, krill oil.

Cleanmarine® Krill Oil was the first Omega 3 Oil in Europe to be awarded MSC Certification. The MSC has two standards, for sustainable fishing and seafood traceability. Fisheries and seafood businesses voluntarily seek certification against the relevant standards, which meet the world's best practice guidelines for certification and ecolabelling.

"So they are a sustainable responsible company that use krill because of its high omega content  - and it also contain astaxanthin,  a powerful anti-oxidant. Fish oil does not contain astaxanthin naturally and this has to be added separately.

I know the majority of supplements advise for children age 3 and over but I decided to start using it as soon as she turned 2 1/2. I didn't give her the full dose to start with and gently increased it. She now takes 5ml.

Giving any type of supplements to children can be tricky because these little monkeys can be quite stubborn when it comes to food. For example, I had to hide Elodie's probiotics in her yogurt or milk. I tried Cleanmarine Krill Oil for Kids Orange Burst before she did and I have to say, the taste was surprisingly pleasant. I introduced it as a treat and said it was a special lolly (it comes with a plastic syringe) and she loved it. I think it might be due to the syringe. She has it everyday after breakfast and is responding very well to it.

So, all in all I really like it. Giving supplements to Elodie shouldn't be a struggle. Choose your battles peeps!

PS. Elodie takes 2 supplements daily, BetterYou DLux Infant Vitamin D and Cleanmarine Krill Oil for Kids and when we go on holiday, because her diet changes, I will add a probiotic to her diet (hidden in her food!) and I use Bio Kult Infantis Probiotic.
