It may come as some surprise to learn that up to 60 per cent of the products we apply to our faces and bodies are absorbed into our bloodstreams. Consider then, the 'nasties' that find their way into some non-organic products, and the case for clean, organic, nourishing, plant-based skincare becomes more compelling.

Plant-based skincare certainly doesn't mean inferior skincare. Often coming with enviable credentials and centuries of worldwide testimony (not to mention the occasional “secret” ingredient long valued by the indigenous peoples of the world!), plant-based skincare has only recently found its way into Western beauty regimes, with the acai berry from the Amazon, and the more widely known oil from the Australian shrub, Melaleuca Alternifolia (commonly known as the Tea Tree), becoming established skincare staples.

Being naturally derived, plant-based skincare can often contain significantly higher levels of active therapeutic ingredients, allowing them to vie favourably with their chemical competitors. This is not to say it would be a good idea to moisturise with neat essential oils! These are naturally powerful products, and should be respected – always diluted in a suitable carrier oil for skin application.

Nor is today's natural skincare in any way playing catch-up. No, intensive research, careful sourcing and the perfect balance of safe, active ingredients – together with the added benefit of a commitment to non-animal testing – goes to ensure organic skincare products in the Twenty-First Century are some of the finest, most effective, you can buy. For example, rejuvenating your skin while you sleep is easy now, thanks to products such as Dr Mercola Healthy Skin Organic Night Moisturiser, which can be hugely beneficial.

Why is organic better?

When we invest in organic skincare, we not only see the benefits, but feel them in the application   of some of the most luxurious yet gentle products available. As good for our skin as they are for the environment, organic beauty products are often:

  • completely free from synthetic ingredients
  • paraben free, and
  • have no potentially damaging petrochemicals added

When many of us are making the commitment to eat organically, it surely makes sense to extend that to what we put on our precious skin.
