What are the benefits of adding collagen to your diet?

Collagen is an important component of the bodies we live in. It plays a vital role in the composition of our skin, as well as various parts that include tendons and ligaments.

With an ability to help our movement and skin’s appearance, it is little wonder that collagen supplements have grown in popularity. But it’s also possible to get collagen through the food we consume, and by incorporating more collagen protein products into our diet.

In the latest Evolution Organics blog, we take a look at the health benefits of collagen, and how you can take steps to introduce more collagen to your diet and reap those benefits.

What is collagen?

Collagen is a structural protein. It is the main protein present in the extracellular matrix that plays a vital role in the connective tissues throughout our body.

It is present in abundance in the bodies of mammals, comprising between 25% and 35% of the protein in mammal bodies. As mentioned, it is mainly found in our skin and in the tendons and ligaments that enable us to move around as we do. Collagen is also found in our guts, teeth, eyes and blood vessels.

Collagen is made from amino acids that bind together. In fact, the word collagen comes from the Greek ‘Kolla’, meaning glue. This nicely represents the role that collagen plays in our bodies, as it is important in keeping various parts working harmoniously and successfully.

There are various types of collagen in our body, with type 1 collagen being the most important. This is made of dense fibres and is most present in the various parts of the body mentioned above. Type 2 collagen is looser and is found in elastic cartilage, while type 3 supports muscle and organ structure. Type 4 supports filtration and is found in the skin.

How to add collagen to your diet

If you are seeking ways to enhance your collagen levels through your diet, the good news is there are plenty of foods that can be helpful.

The skins of many animals contain high levels of collagen, so chicken skin and pork skin for example are great options here.

Foods like beef and fish are also advantageous and can boost your collagen levels.

Any food that contains gelatin is also good for upping your collagen levels. Gelatin derives from collagen, and forms after collagen has been cooked. Therefore any food with high gelatin levels, such as bone broth for example, can boost your collagen levels too.

Other foods with high collagen content include fish, kale, spinach, and sweet potatoes. You can also get more collagen through items like beets and garlic, so there are plenty of tasty and interesting ways to enhance your collagen intake.

Collagen through nutrients

The foods we eat are an important element of enhancing our collagen production. But we can also take nutrients to enhance the amount of collagen our bodies produce.

Vitamin C is very important for a number of bodily functions, but it can also help boost your collagen levels. Many fruits are good here, including oranges, lemons and strawberries.

Proline too can enhance collagen production. This is found in dairy products and vegetables like mushrooms and asparagus, while glycine is equally advantageous.

Copper is another strong source of collagen, and is found in organ meats, cashew nuts and lentils.
