Keep your pets calm this festive season Part 2

Hello to all pet owners out there,

Hopefully like me you look forward to the Autumn season with your pets, as the colder weather arrives we get the pleasure of cuddling up to our cats and dogs even more for warmth and who doesn’t like long walks in the beautiful changing colours of the landscape.

With this season also comes a lot of extra activity and festive fun, such as Halloween, Bonfire night and before you know it Christmas will be upon us!
All of this is great social activity, which is important at this time of year with the darker hours and colder weather, to keep our moods and spirits high.

However a lot of us have beloved pets (cats and dogs) that aren’t always happy with the extra noises, people, fires and commotion that goes on during this time. Common reactions can be to bark, pace around, acting very unsettled or hide away nervously.

I would always suggest speaking to your Vet to check there isn’t something else going on with your cat or dog; however it may be like me that your pet is in perfect health, but only struggles with a few activities or noises in particular. It is always a good idea to make a safe, dark space that is as quiet as possible for your pet to go to if he/she isn’t happy.

Sometimes this still doesn’t settle them down, or at least not until they have completely exhausted them selves with the stress of it all that they just fall asleep. Other times we have no other option but to keep them separated from guests or the outdoor fireworks and bonfires, which then isolates them from the group, which can often only stress them out more.

I am writing this not only to say I feel your concern for your pets at this time of year, but also to say that there may be another natural answer we can all try this year!

A lot of you who regularly shop with Evolution Organics are familiar with Dr. Mercola’s wonderful products, including his natural health products for pets.
Dr. Mercola has put together a natural supplement for cats and dogs that could help them cope with this extra stress and anxiety they feel at this time of year called ‘Zen Pet’.

It is normal for our pets to react to these situations, as they feel they are being threatened or attacked by these loud noises, fires and large groups of people.
Just like humans the adrenal gland releases the hormones adrenaline, cortisol and corticosterone; which all create an energy and strength for us to deal with this threat we feel. This reaction causes a stress on the body and over time this stress can lead to impaired immunity and even anxiety or depression. Even emotional stress in pets that just curl up into a ball and hide away until it is over can be affected in the same way.

Luckily Dr. Mercola’s Zen Pet has natural ingredients that help to gently bring the system back into the optimal levels of these ‘fight or flight’ hormones, which then can help to keep your pet calmer in these stressful situations.

It contains 6 natural herbs and vitamins (Holy Basil (Tulsi), Ashwaganda, Camomille, L-Theanine, Rhodiola and Vitamin B6) with the great taste of chicken – which I know my dog will love!

‘Zen Pet’ could also be beneficial for everyday stresses in your animals, such as car trips, storms, grooming and visits to the vets.

I wish you all a happy and healthy festive season; hopefully all our fury friends will be able to enjoy it too!
