Happiness… the ultimate goal?

For today we are looking at the ‘psychological emotional’ aspect of the core evolution cycle of health, meditation and breathing.

It was nearly a year ago that we last covered this part of the health cycle; it is as I have said many times before a massive subject that could take us in a myriad of directions all of which are important to building a deeper understanding of what true health can mean to you.

Last time we covered this subject I followed the direction of breathing, we reviewed some simple tests that can be applied to see if you have a good breathing pattern and discussed some of the implications of faulty breathing. For more information on breathing please review July 21st 2009 blog post. For a follow up also review the August 14th 2009 post – better breathing continued.

This time, I have decided to come to the essential, to bring us to the conclusion of the health equation and in my mind to the central attainment that all other aspects of the health equation point to. This is of course happiness!

This is a subject with allot of merit, after all what is it that most of us human beings are looking for? Is there one thing that we would all like to have more in our lives other than true happiness?

Could it be true to say that if we are happy, truly happy that there is nothing more that we need? Perhaps some things would be nice, it might be nice to be in a loving relationship or to have a new car or a comfortable home, however if we are already happy then these additions will make no difference to our central state of happiness.

The point being that if we have found happiness then there is nothing we can add to make us happier, nothing we can add to our selves to make us more that we already are.

Our modern consumer society would not of course be holding up this view point as the way in which consumerism works is to create the allusion that for us to be happy we need to be 1 stone lighter, with a smaller nose and no wrinkles, you need to be blonder and taller, you need to have designer clothes and the latest ultimate cool car!

The point being that if our perceived state of happiness is dependent on anything external then what happens when it’s taken away? The loving relationship can quickly turn to hate, the feeling of self worth and value can be gone in a crash of the stock market as the bank balance is halved. If we know that our happiness is always on the line through dependency then are we truly happy, or is that perception of happiness standing on the knife edge of its opposite emotion?

I see it that happiness is always present; we can’t attain it as such as it’s already here. There is nothing to get, we can’t add happiness to ourselves as it is what we already are, it’s like the sun being obscured by the clouds just because it’s a cloudy day does not mean there is no sun!

Happiness and joy are the natural state; we just have to connect to them within ourselves. The ‘mind’ the thinker is the part of your being that is always asking for more, to add more to itself to be happy. This is very clear as our society can only be a reflection of our minds and our society is a consumer society that pursues looks and glamour, money and gain. It is a reflection of the way in which we think.

In meditation we can sit and practice the art of letting everything be as it is, let the thoughts leave the head and float away, let the energy of thought diminish in your body and the energy of stillness arise, the energy of stillness is the energy of happiness and joy. It has no conditions and is not reliant on anything as it is your natural state, you can be rich, you can be poor, you can be anything that you are right now where ever you are right now… and you can find complete and deep happiness right now.

  2. Hi

Well there are many reasons for why I write this blog. For one, of course I enjoy it. I also believe that to run this kind of shop with integrity I should do my best to educate people to the whole picture of good health. And thirdly I have also spent the last 10 years dedicated to the study of human health and need some where to write all my thinking down!

    In health and happiness
